An EC or pH number is not fully comparable until the buyer identifies how the sample was conditioned, how water and material were combined, how the extract was obtained, which meter and units were used, and which tolerance and retest rule control the decision. UMass Extension describes saturated media extract, 1:2 dilution, and PourThru as different approaches that can produce different numbers. For an unopened commercial cocopeat block, the buyer and laboratory should agree a suitable incoming-material method rather than silently comparing results from different procedures.

Write the method before writing the acceptance number
A technical specification should name the material condition, extraction procedure, water quality, mass or volume basis, contact time, agitation, filtration or settling step, measurement temperature, meter calibration, reporting unit, replicate rule, and rounding convention. It should also say whether a result applies to one block, a composite sample, a test unit, or the lot decision. This prevents a familiar dispute: supplier, buyer, and laboratory each report a defensible value, but the values came from different preparation routes.
Define the specimen
Identify unopened block, hydrated coir, production substrate, or container leachate. These are not interchangeable test objects.
Fix the extraction
Name the agreed ratio or recognized procedure, water specification, conditioning, contact time, agitation, separation, and measurement timing.
Control the meter
Record calibration standards, temperature compensation policy, probe condition, unit, resolution, replicate handling, and operator or laboratory.
Connect the decision
State target or limit, tolerance, rounding, sample basis, retest trigger, retained sample, and authority to accept, hold, or reject the lot.
Fields the buyer should put in writing
The table is designed to expose missing decisions before a sample or shipment creates urgency. Adapt it to the actual product, laboratory, destination, test risk, and contract; delete an item only after the responsible parties agree that it does not apply.

A controlled comparison from block to reported result
The sequence below is a procurement framework, not a substitute for a qualified laboratory procedure. Its purpose is to keep the specimen identity and agreed method intact from sampling through the commercial decision.
- Lock the specification revision — Attach the EC and pH method, limits, tolerances, sample basis, reporting format, and retest rule to the quotation or purchase document.
- Identify and condition samples — Preserve lot, pallet, block, date, seal, and custody information; use the specified conditioning and water without unrecorded substitution.
- Measure and record deviations — Calibrate as required, run the agreed replicates, retain raw readings, and state any departure from the procedure before interpreting the result.
- Apply the decision rule — Compare the correctly rounded result with the written criterion, then release, hold, retest, investigate, or reject only through the agreed authority.
What a useful EC and pH report should preserve
A buyer-useful report identifies the sample and lot, condition on receipt, method and revision, extraction ratio or route, water used, dates, instrument or laboratory, units, individual readings where required, calculated result, rounding, deviations, and sign-off. A certificate that presents only “EC: 0.5” without unit, method, specimen basis, or sample identity cannot by itself demonstrate order conformity. Keep the report connected to the retained sample and purchase specification so a later investigation can reconstruct the decision.

Frequently asked questions
Can two EC results be compared when both use mS/cm?
Not safely on the unit alone. Sample condition, extraction method, water, ratio, timing, temperature, and calculation can change the reported value.
Should PourThru be used to accept dry cocopeat blocks?
PourThru is presented by extension sources for monitoring planted containers. An incoming compressed-block method should be agreed separately with the responsible buyer and laboratory.
What happens when supplier and buyer results differ?
Follow the written split-sample, retained-sample, retest, third-party laboratory, and disposition rule. Do not switch methods after seeing an unfavorable result.
Does the published product EC act as a certificate?
No. It is a product-sheet reference. Lot-specific conformity requires the method, sample identity, evidence, tolerance, and final written order criteria.
